Machine Vision Application Evaluation Process

Machine vision is an essential aspect of the manufacturing process that allows you to automate many of your quality operations and create a more efficient and cost-effective way to produce defect-free parts. 1. Define Requirements

First, identify the requirements of your vision applications and the components, samples, or products to be tested. Knowing the application requirements allows the Gibson Engineering vision team to recreate your process with as many real-world variables included as possible - building confidence that the evaluation's hardware recommendation will be the correct solution. Necessary application requirements include:

  • Cycle time requirements
  • Inspection criteria, with tolerances
  • Field of view
  • Physical constraints

2. Send Us Parts

Send in all of your sample parts to Gibson Engineering for examination, submitting both bad and good parts in all sizes for the most accurate results. Be sure to include necessary tools and fixtures for assembly, along with pictures or videos of the process. All of these things will help the engineers get a thorough understanding of how your machine/process operates and what variables need to be considered for a successful vision deployment.

3. Proof of Concept

At this stage, the experts at Gibson Engineering will test your parts under various resolution cameras, lighting, styles, and lensing options to achieve optimal imaging & inspection results. We will generate an inspection time analysis and evaluation report to help us determine the success of your machine vision application against your specific parameters.

4. Review the Results

In this final step, Gibson Engineering will give you feedback and samples to illustrate the progress on your components/samples. Through an online or in-person review of the results with our team you'll gain access to valuable sample images, job files, and application feedback from the experts who worked on your project.

Bryon Sol - PLC Programming, Machine Vision, and Motion Control

Bryon Sol holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Western University (Formerly University of Western Ontario, Canada) and a Degree in Controls Engineering from Fanshawe College. He has worked at Gibson Engineering since 2012 and previously has worked as the primary Vision and Controls Engineer for Interplex Engineered Products for 8 years and as an Engineering Technologist for 3 years prior to that. Currently, he is working as a Senior Applications Engineer at Gibson with his focus being training and technical support. In his free time, Bryon enjoys playing guitar, golf, and traveling with his family.

Dave Miller - Automation, Vision, Robotics, HMI's

Prior to becoming a senior application engineer at Gibson, Dave Miller worked at Spire Solar, Virtek Vision, and deHaart Inc., where he developed a passion for automation. He holds a degree from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell in Management Information Systems. Dave grew up loving to play sports and passionately follows all the Boston sports, Go Bruins! When he is not programming robots on his weekends, he enjoys playing golf, billiards and spending time with friends.

Batu Sipka - Robotics & Machine Vision

Batu Sipka grew up in Istanbul, Turkey and came to Massachusetts to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he graduated with a double major in both Robotics Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering. While working through his college education Batu was awarded in various hackathon competitions hosted at both WPI and MIT. He is also an AIA Advanced Level Certified Vision Professional. When he’s not solving machine vision or robotic challenges at Gibson, Batu can be found playing recreational team sports, rock climbing, focusing on his photography, baking, and cooking for his friends. Batu also holds the esteemed position of Gibson Engineering’s team building cheerleader.

Mike Harrington - Senior Application Engineer

Prior to becoming a senior application engineer at Gibson, Mike Harrington previously spent almost 20 years at a large injection molding company in Rhode Island under various ownership. Mike brought cutting edge automation to their factory floor through hundreds of upgrades to older equipment and led a large scale lights out manufacturing expansion project that brought plastic pellets to finished products, packed, palletized, and wrapped for delivery to their customers. Mike was responsible for implementing countless vision and control systems which have made him an invaluable asset to Gibson and our customers. Mike enjoys sports, being active outside, including mountain biking, hiking, and kayaking often with his father. Mike previously coached and still enjoys watching his daughter on the softball field.

Mark Guida - Senior Field Application Engineer

As a Senior Field Application Engineer for Gibson Engineering, Mark Guida has well over a decade of hands-on industrial automation application knowledge which he leverages while supporting the technical sales team and Gibson customers. Mark's favorite proverb is one we've all heard, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Mark has said he wants to keep the technical bellies of his team and customers full, only then he knows he's done a good job! Mark is a Kettering University graduate with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and simply lives for technology, new and old. If it can be taken apart, he'll have it in pieces at some point during the day just to see how that one piece works. Anything he can learn by tinkering, he will. Anything he can fix by breaking, he will.
